Rationale

Community-based oral health initiatives play a vital role in early detection, prevention, and awareness of oral diseases, especially in underserved populations. Bhim Nagar, Mankhurd (E), represents a community where access to preventive oral healthcare and awareness remains limited. This camp was conducted to bridge this gap by delivering essential oral healthcare services and promoting self-care practices.

 

Aim

To improve oral health awareness, facilitate early diagnosis of oral diseases, and encourage self-care practices among the community through education and engagement.

 

Objectives

  • To conduct comprehensive oral health screening for early detection of dental conditions 
  • To provide targeted oral health education to individuals and families 
  • To promote preventive practices and healthy oral hygiene habits 
  • To administer a Self-Care Oral Health Pledge to reinforce behavioral change 
  • To refer patients requiring further treatment to appropriate healthcare facilities 

Target Population

Residents of Bhim Nagar, Mankhurd (E), including adults, children, and elderly individuals from underserved sections of the community.

 

Program Highlights

The camp was successfully conducted with active participation from faculty, interns, and community members.

  • Oral Health Screening:
    A large number of beneficiaries were screened for dental caries, periodontal diseases, oral lesions, and other conditions. Individuals requiring further care were appropriately referred to Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai. 
  • Oral Health Education:
    Participants were educated on: 
    • Proper tooth brushing techniques 
    • Importance of oral hygiene and diet counselling 
    • Harmful effects of tobacco on oral and general health 
    • Preventive strategies for maintaining oral health 
  • Self-Care Oral Health Pledge:
    A key highlight of the camp was the administration of a Self-Care Oral Health Pledge, where participants committed to maintaining daily oral hygiene practices, adopting healthy lifestyles, and avoiding harmful habits. 

 

Community Engagement

The program emphasized interactive communication, ensuring that participants were actively involved through demonstrations, one-to-one counselling, and open discussions. This approach enhanced understanding and encouraged long-term behavior change.

 

Conclusion

The Oral Health Screening, Education & Self-Care Pledge Camp at Bhim Nagar, Mankhurd (E), was a meaningful step toward promoting preventive oral healthcare at the grassroots level. The initiative successfully combined screening, education, and behavioral commitment, contributing to the larger goal of improving community oral health outcomes.
