Rationale:

In alignment with the global theme “A Happy Mouth is… A Happy Life,” the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai, conducted an Oral Health Screening and Awareness Camp on 30 March 2026 at Sathe Nagar, Mankhurd West. The initiative aimed to promote preventive oral healthcare, early diagnosis, and self-care practices among patients and the general community, reinforcing the importance of oral health as an integral part of overall well-being.

 

Objectives

  • To conduct oral health screening for early detection of dental diseases 
  • To create awareness regarding oral hygiene and preventive practices 
  • To promote self-oral healthcare and healthy habits 
  • To encourage community participation through oral health pledge 

 

Target Population

  • Patients attending the camp 
  • General community members 
  • Individuals from underserved and urban populations 

 

Activities Conducted

1. Oral Health Screening

Comprehensive oral examinations were carried out for patients to identify:

  • Dental caries  
  • Periodontal conditions 
  • Oral lesions and other abnormalities 

Patients requiring further treatment were advised and referred appropriately.

 

2. Oral Health Education & Awareness

Educational sessions were conducted focusing on:

  • Proper brushing techniques 
  • Importance of maintaining oral hygiene 
  • Role of diet in oral health 
  • Prevention of common dental diseases 

 

3. Oral Health Pledge for Self-Care

Participants actively took an Oral Health Pledge, committing to:

  • Brushing twice daily 
  • Maintaining good oral hygiene practices 
  • Adopting preventive approaches to oral health 

This outreach activity highlights the importance of community-based screening and education programs, especially in urban and underserved areas. By combining screening, awareness, and pledge-taking, the initiative ensured both immediate and long-term impact.

 

Conclusion

The camp successfully demonstrated that awareness combined with early detection can significantly improve oral health outcomes. Through such initiatives, the Department continues to advance its mission of: “Reaching Every Smile through Prevention, Awareness, and Care.”
